Read: Matthew 5:13-16
Max Lucado was certain that he wasn't dreaming when he told the story about good candles that he found in his closet. Together with his two kids and her pregnant wife Denalyn they spent a night without any lights on. It was almost midnight when the power broke. Her wife was pregnant and his two children were afraid of the dark. So he decided to go to the storage room alone. Seeing the old candles hidden in their old closet he started lighting the big one and bringing the small ones.
It was funny to imagine that he started talking to them in the dark. On his way he started talking to the candles. He was pretty amazed how the candles could give light in the darkness. He started telling them where they would be placed. After placing the big one on the dinner table a voice was heard from nowhere.
“Hold it right there!” he taught it was his wife Denalyn who was only playing with him.
“Wait, I’m still talking to you”.
He was shocked to see that the big candle that he placed on top of the dinning table was the one talking.
“Is this real, are you really talking to me?” Max was mesmerized.
“Yes I am” replied the candle.
“So what’s the problem?”.
“I’m not ready to give light”
“But you’re a candle your supposed to give light.” he replied.
Then he also heard the other candles in his hand saying the same thing. They’re not prepared. He then went back to the storage closet to get other candles. But they only say the same thing “We’re not prepared”.
Others told him that they haven’t medicated yet or have any experiences yet to be a good candle.
Max became confused and does not know what to do. Then a soft girl voice started talking.
“I can help you” a purple small candle said.
“I sing for the candles so they can have the courage to give light”.
“Well then if that’s what you do. Sing for us” he replied.
Her voice echoed in the storage closet when she started singing then the other candles started singing with her too. Max tried to stop them because he knew that his wife and children were waiting for him. But they wouldn’t so he just blow the candles out and leave. On his way out he accidentally bumped to his wife.
“Where are the candles?” she asked.
“They won’t work. Where did you buy those candles anyway?”
“Oh, they’re church candles. Remember the church that closed down across town? I bought them there”
Max was right. It wasn’t a dream. It is a fact that today many candles won’t work. Like most Christians today who does not do their part being the light of the world. Many are called but few are doing their part. Since the day when God called us through struggles and circumstances He wanted us to be the light to others. He wanted us to share our testimonies that we experienced from Him. Telling to others how it was to have Jesus Christ in our lives. You could also be a good candle to others by giving light for those who are still in darkness. How about you are you a good candle?
